Spiritual Direction in Columbus, GA

In the middle of full, busy lives — and sometimes in the middle of grief, uncertainty, or spiritual longing — there is a deep need to slow down and listen. Not for answers, necessarily. But for presence. For clarity. For the quiet recognition that God is already at work in your story.

That is the heart of spiritual direction. And at ADAPT Network, Barbara Cummings offers this sacred companionship to individuals, groups, and retreat communities throughout Columbus, GA.

What Is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is an ancient practice rooted in the Christian contemplative tradition — though it is available and meaningful to anyone on a sincere spiritual journey, regardless of denomination or background.

It is not therapy. It is not counseling. It is not teaching or advice-giving. Spiritual direction is a sacred conversation between two people, guided by prayer and holy curiosity, in which a trained director helps you notice and respond to the movement of God in your everyday life.

A spiritual director doesn’t tell you what God is saying. They help you listen for yourself.

Sessions typically unfold through reflective conversation, silence, and prayer — creating space for insight, healing, and a deepened awareness of the divine presence woven through your ordinary days.

Meet Barbara Cummings, Certified Spiritual Director

Barbara Cummings is a Columbus, Georgia native with a deep calling to walk alongside individuals in their spiritual journey. A certified spiritual director through the Selah Spiritual Direction Certification (Siburt Institute for Church Ministry), she brings decades of experience in education, children’s ministry, Young Life, and Christian radio — all woven together by a heart for people and a front-row witness to the brokenness and deep needs present in individuals and families.

Through her own journey, Barbara has experienced the healing and restoration that come through prayer, solitude, counseling, spiritual direction, and mentoring — and it is from that place that she now offers companionship to others.

Barbara provides a peaceful, prayerful space where individuals can slow down, listen, and discern God’s presence in their lives. Her approach is not to teach or counsel, but to gently companion others in noticing where God is already at work in their story. She believes every person’s story is sacred, and that healing, clarity, and wholeness can be found through sacred space, reflection, and prayer.

Who Is Spiritual Direction For?

Barbara welcomes people of all backgrounds and life seasons. You do not need to have your faith figured out, or be in crisis, or belong to a particular church or tradition. Spiritual direction is for anyone who feels a genuine desire to pay attention to God.

Barbara has a particular heart for those navigating:

  • Grief and loss
  • Major life transitions — retirement, divorce, an empty nest, a career shift, relocation
  • Spiritual longing or a sense of disconnection from faith
  • Burnout, especially for those in ministry, caregiving, or helping professions
  • Seasons of questioning, doubt, or spiritual dryness
  • A desire to deepen prayer life and contemplative practice
  • Recovery and healing — finding God’s presence in the midst of hard things

She also works with church staff, ministry teams, and groups seeking a prayerful space for collective discernment and renewal.
