Thoughts on Therapy: Trauma Responses Indicate Resiliency

Research in neuroscience has resulted in a paradigm shift for trauma therapy. Trauma disorders (i.e. PTSD) are now seen as disorders of the body, brain, and nervous system - as opposed to 'disorders of events'. This means that if the body and brain are able to adapt as a response to trauma in order to survive, then the legacy of trauma responses are now viewed as ADAPTATION, NOT PATHOLOGY!

Those souls who have survived life's horrors are resilient: they adapt to meet the circumstances. And, best of all, the fact that they have adapted to survive implies that they can continue to adapt, to learn - neurologically - to survive, to thrive, in the present.

This resiliency, this adaptation, is what I work to foster in the therapy setting.

I welcome your thoughts and comments.
